Legend of the Galactic Heroes rant

I figured I should write a little about the series since it is the name of the site and all. So what is LoGH? It's a space opera/war story/allegory deal, with as much philosophy exchanged as ammunition. Set around the year 3000, it pits two factions, the Free Planets Alliance(the democrats) and the Galactic Empire(the imperialists), against each other in a brutal war that has already lasted almost 150 years. Now first off, let me make this clear; its a long(114 episodes, 2 movies, multiple side stories), old anime series about men fighting for their country and their beliefs. There is no fan service. There are no extremely pretty boys(besides Reinhard, but hes an exception beyond exceptions). There are no galaxy sized robots throwing said galaxies at each other to Japanese rap. What there are though are some of the best written characters and stories I've ever seen, anime or otherwise. The interaction between characters is just so smooth, the dialogue is so natural. You really feel like you get to know the humongous cast throughout the 114 episode trek, as you watch them fight, cry, laugh, die, struggle, and get married. I don't remember who said it, but I found this statement right on the money: no character in LoGH is simply "a face". Everyone has a story to tell, their individual lives forming a vast web of relationships and alliances. The focus of the story, however, is on two men on opposing sides: Yang Wen-li, a man who by all accounts is not someone meant to be a soldier, glum and perpetually commenting on the senselessness of the conflict. However this is in stark contrast to his brilliant tactical mind, rivaled only by his eternal rival Reinhard. This causes him to be given nicknames like Miracle Yang and Yang the Magician, much to his chagrin. Although Yang is a devoted follower of democracy, he himself loathes politcial power and politics in general. This brings up one of the series major points; The school of thought for democracy is if the rulers aren't elected by common rule they have no right to power. However, what the elected party is corrupt, caring only for personal gain while the country collapses? On the other hand, what if the autocratic party uses its supreme political power to help the people, making real reforms efficiently and quickly? Even Yang does not know what the answer is. But regardless, he fights for his country and his lofty ideals of democracy and power resting in the hands of the people.
The other is Reinhard von Lohengram, an upstart young admiral who plans to one day conquer the entire universe. Originally the son of a poor noble, his sister caught the eye of the Kaiser, ruler of the Empire, and his father sold her to him. Reinhard joined the military along with his best friend Siegfried Kircheis, quickly rising up the ranks due to his superiors' ignorance giving him a chance to shine. Despised by all of the older admirals and nobles, who affectionately call him the "Blonde Brat", Reinhard's tactical genius and charisma eventually place him at the top of the food chain. However, he is far from perfect; he is clueless in matters outside of war and politics. Peacetime is torture to him, battle the only place where he feels at home. Also, his reliance on Kircheis for tactical and moral support borders on overdependence. I won't spoil anything but this causes him great sorrow later on.

The show also has some of the biggest fleet battles I've ever seen, with individual encounters involving tens of thousands of ships on each side. It's almost mind-boggling when you see an uncountable number of lights floating through space, only to have it close in and reveal that each one is a space ship. The battles themselves are a work of art as well, the commanders of both sides outsmarting and defeating each other with outstanding tactics and strategy. Each admiral has his own unique flagship(so we don't get confused) that are all pretty cool. My favorite would probably be the Brunehild(shown above), Reinhard's flagship. It just has a simple beauty and coolness that demands respect. The battles are significantly more awesome thanks to the score being composed entirely of classical music. Watching thousands of ships firing, destroying each other, disappearing into the vastness of space as Bach or Beethoven plays, as if a requiem to send them off to Valhalla; it doesn't get much better than that.

So, overall, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a show I feel everyone should at least try. I won't lie, no matter how much I love it and rant and rave about it there are some people who won't enjoy it as much as I did. It isn't everybody's cup of tea. But if you enjoy a story that grips you from the very beginning, taking you through a vast and complicated web of people, situations, and philosophies, I can't imagine any show that can surpass LoGH. Simply put, it is one of the greatest war stories ever, and my all time favorite anime.
